Past Projects

Children's Museum of the Brazos Valley Docent Program

The purpose of the Childrens Museum is to provide fun, educational opportunities for children of the Brazos Valley. The Museum reaches out to all children and youth in our community, particularly to under-served children who may not have the means to access other educational opportunities. Volunteers assisted with special programs like their Fall Festival and the Daddy Daughter Dance. The summer is an especially busy time for the Museum, and our volunteers also assisted with their camps.

Life Enhancement Project

Partnered with Voices for Children, BVCASA, we worked with youth who have grown up in the foster care system and are approaching graduation and adulthood. This project worked to provide basic necessities to these youth along with peer leadership and direction in life skills. JLBCS volunteers were trained to work with these youth in a group setting, hosting a series of seminars such as continuing education, personal finance and acclimation into the workforce. The participants were provided with basic supplies to get started using funds from the Junior League.

Reach Out and Read

The Reach Out and Read program based at the Community Health center in Bryan seeks to place a childrens book in the hands of every child who visits the clinic for a well-check up. JL volunteers served as model readers in the reading corner of the waiting room. Serving a true need in the community, the funding the Junior League provided for this project went directly to the purchase of books.

Safe Harbour Supervised Visitation
The Supervised Visitation Center established by Voices for Children, Inc., CASA of Brazos County provides a safe, neutral location for children to have visitation with a parent when supervised visitation is court ordered or recommended.  In addition to providing a fun, family-oriented location for visitation, the Center offers a parent education program to assist parents in developing a safe relationship with their children.

Junior League volunteers assisted during scheduled visitations by welcoming families and observing family interaction.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the College Station Medical Center cares for premature and sick babies in our area. The Junior League volunteers will work directly with the March of Dimes to design and implement a volunteer program for the NICU. Volunteers will provide support for family members of these tiny infants, staff the reception desk and family waiting area, and greet and interact with families.
